If everything goes according to plan, I should be moving to Carson City soon. Right now I live in Gardnerville, which is a 16 mile drive from work (32 mile round trip). Due to changing weather conditions, safety, and time with the family, this route is not practical for bicycle commuting...especially year round. A house in Carson City will allow me to ride to work year round no matter what the weather, as I'll be living within one mile of work. Shoot, I could X-Country ski to work if I needed to if the snow gets real deep!
As you can see from the picture, Carson City is very close to all sorts of recreational potential. And if the Sierras were to split apart, I'd be swimming in enough water to cover the entire state of California. Yeah, Lake Tahoe is that deep!
It will be a dream come true to use a bicycle for most of my transportation, and ridicule those who choose not to! True bicycle snobbery awaits me...
Thanks, Jerome for the video tip!
My Current Monthly Commute Statistics:
Miles Driven: 600
Hours in the car: 20 (almost one full day!)
Fuel Costs: $54
Probability of Death Commuting at 70 mph next to people with NASCAR numbers in their windows: High
My Sanity: Priceless
Note: I borrowed this picture from the Carson City Nevada Convention and Visitors Bureau website.

One less person to ridicule. This stuff is working.
You are not traffic! You are a road hazard!
You lucky, lucky bastard!
I think I want to move there too!
Any chance you could rent out the garage to a midwesterner who's down on his luck?
Well, not really, but it often pays to grovel!
I did a Google map for Carson City and the first link on the list below was "moonlight bunny ranch"!
Now I know why your moving there! :^)
Splendid!
xd - You have the location right, just need to fix the job!
oldman - It may be me looking for a garage to sleep in if I don't find a house and strike a deal soon!
Yeah, I saw that "bunny ranch" link under common searches! If I'm going to drop $1,000, it's going to be on a 29er single speed...not 2 minutes of "love". That place is actually in a different county, just outside the city limits. Not that I know about such things...
I'd get your place sold first and then worry about a new place to live. Throw your crap in storage and rent an apt if you have to. Sounds like lots of homes may be on the market soon.
We've already accepted an offer and have a date we have to move out by!
Bad thing about renting for us is finding a place that'll take 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 mouse. It's hard enough with one pet!
jeff, my job or your job? if my job, yeah, commuting to reno everyday bites, but you already know that.
suhweet!
i'm constantly looking for jobs closer to home to i can ridicule others who drive.
someday...
Good deal! And if you get a bigger garage you can get a few more bikes.
now that's cool. congrats.
I have a 3 car garage right now. Most of the homes for sale in Carson are older and have are 2 car garages. Some even have 1 car! Many have sheds in the backyard though, so yard tools and stuff can go out there.
Besides, I don't need any more bikes! Well maybe just one more...
I walk to work.
You don't need "more" bicycles? Blasphemy I tell you.
You can never have enough bicycles; never!
Before you know, you'll be selling your car and wearing tie-dye shirts - like me! Except for the tie-dye shirts part.
I always laugh when I see the "Keep Tahoe Blue" bumper-sticker on SUVs.
Doesn't anyone get the irony of it BEING a bumper-sticker, much less when you tag a SUV with it?
i don't think they stick very well to jet skis.
Spring 2008 and hopefully I'll once again lug my sh*t out there. I can't wait!
on Wed and Thursday, I walk from the kitchen to the den to work......other day's I drive all the way to work....I used to ride my bike to work every once and a while.....have not in a very long time.
"Keep Tahoe Blue" stickers are everywhere on cars up here. All sorts of variations too. There's one that has a red, white, and blue striped Tahoe that reads, "Keep Tahoe Red White and Blue". Not sure what that means. Freedom to dump your 2-stroke oil in the Lake?
Another one makes reference to wine, "Drink Tahoe Red".
I even saw one where the kid had altered the letters to say, "Eat Blue Poo".
I asked Minus Car for one of his cool new "Minus Car" stickers. At first I thought that sticker would look cool on the back of my car with all the other ones, but then quickly realized the stupidity of this thought.
I believe the "Drink Tahoe Red" sticker refers to the beer brewed at the Lake Tahoe Brewing Co.
Red Ale maybe? I just jumped to a conclusion of Red Wine with no research...
Another possibility is a tribute to the tequila swilling Red Rocker's Cabo Wabo Cantina up at the Lake. A remote possibility anyway.
Or maybe a drinking induced Red Tide.
That's funny because I just assumed it was the beer... maybe we should get to the bottom of this. Let's go up there and drink wine and beer till we figure it out!
it is the beer. a buddy of mine a few years back reported seing a KTB sticker modified to say Keep Tahoe Sluty. creative, eh?
Ahhh... This time I did a search on "Tahoe Red" and got the hits. Makes sense now.
Can we still go there and drink beer and wine until we figure something out? I don't really care what...
Sounds good. I'm not the type of guy who believes everything he reads on the internets. Therefore we must go see for ourselves!
I'm in...
I'm so tired of the Keep Tahoe Blue bumper sticker. Of course we want to keep Tahoe Blue.Duh! And whats even worse than seeing that sticker on a newer SUV is seeing it on some 10 year old car that is spewing out more carbon dioxide than any new gas guzzling vehicle. They need to come up with something else. Something that stirs the imagination. Like "Save the Forest, Steal a Tree" to address the overgrowth of our forests. Or " Dont pee in our lake, because we dont want to swim in your toilet" With a picture of Bill Murray from CaddyShack eating the baby ruth from the side of the pool. Whoooo mammy, its been a long day...
'Drink Tahoe Red" does in fact refer to Tahoe Red Ale. There are many variations of that sticker though, like "Keep Tahoe Local" or "Keep Truckee Green" (which has the outline of Tahoe and is colored like a marijuana bud) "Keep Reno Skating" with a pool instead of Tahoe and "Keep Reno Dirty" with a trash can... The keep Tahoe blue act is stupid though. I can't pour concrete after October.
Actually I am Keep Reno Dirty, League to Save House Music in Reno. The sticker has a tumbleweed in place of the lake. We also have shits. If anyone want's one hit me up at myspace.com/keeprenodirty
