The Dog Days of Summer

Back in the spring time I remember feeling like I was superman. I couldn't ride enough, and was doing 130 mile weeks. I'm probably doing 40-50 mile weeks now and I'm exhausted! Some days I wonder if something is wrong with me, but I'm hoping it's just the heat.

Most nights I drive home from work, and have just enough strength to eat some dinner and drink a beer.

Anyone else feeling this way?

I'm hoping it's just the dog days of summer.

Big time.
It has been very hot and humid here and I do not function well in that environment. Even my dogs don't want to be outside!
Rode on Monday and every particle of sand kicked up by the bike was on my body at the end of the ride.
But, as you said, I still have the strength to have a beer! :^)

I've pretty much felt like that since Griffin's birth....3/29. I keep saying "Im getting out on my road bike tomorrow" but, ugh, tomorrow comes and here i sit. I need an intervention.

Amy - Your request has been forwarded to the FBC intervention team. Expect to be whisked away when you least expect it.

Amy, that's not very long ago, so don't beat yourself up. Besides biking is supposed to be fun, not a chore. It'll happen.

Jeff, when it gets to be too much of an effort to tilt a barley-pop, then you can say you've got problems. Perhaps you need a break from riding even though you aren't putting in as many miles you had been. Maybe the BMX racing started the decline.

No way man! You guys are crazy!

Ride ON!

but yeah, the heat sucked. But it's nice now in Reno at least...

Who's going to ride Emigrant with me Saturday? I should be @ the Stampede end by 8:30 or 9:00.

You people down south are spoiled by a season that lasts too long! Up here, we're already feeling cooler mornings and noticing the sun setting earlier. Another month, and the leaves will be changing color.

There's no time to feel tired! We can collapse in October.

Smudgemo - I haven't even been to the BMX track in two weeks because of the heat! It's scorching and windy there in the evenings. We will return soon though. I plan to bring the Kona Scab there (26 inch dirt jump bike) for some play time. I have more courage to jump on that bike. I have thought about a vacation though. Some beach time...

Wolfy - Sand and Suds is happening on Saturday. You may need to reconsider.

Amy - Good plan!

Tim - Lake Tahoe and the higher country is beautiful right now. The valleys are a bit rough though. I think my body is built for colder lands. Extra body hair and fatty deposits around the mid section to help survive those 2 hour periods I go without eating.

For me it's the wind more than the heat. It just kills me! The head wind on my ride home from work today had me feeling like I just wanted to stop and sit down on the side of the road. It was windy at Emigrant last Sunday too and it just made me cranky. Must be left over resentment from when I had long hair...

Jeff Moser said...

Yep, the wind too. My car was all over the road on the way home from the strong crosswinds. It's been like this for weeks now.

And the long hair thing too. My hair used to get in my eyes from the wind so much that I nearly went mad. No more problems with that though.

I find that I tolerate the wind a lot more on my mountain bike than the road bike.

Brent said...

Yeah it is more tolerable on MTB except for the dust!

i think you need some vacation time.

the last time i complained about the wind, my buddy just said "it just blows thru your helmet vents faster then." he wasn't having any of it.

xd, your buddy has obviously not ridden from Dayton to Carson at 4 in the afternoon... That wind vents your brain!

Yes, I have been a total sloth. Did Kingsbury Grade and was dropped so bad by my riding partner... the ride ended with " I hope you feel better" instead of " nice ride" Last night I got the crazy night ride bug and started pedaling to Star Lake on the rim trail at 8pm. Only to realize 3.5 miles into the 18 mile ride that " Night Rides Suck" so I turned around and went home. I check the mail every day to see if my Death Ride 5 Pass jersey is in as some kind of a merit badge.
Magrei-Heres a quick story about getting back in shape... years ago, before I was married. I responded to an ad in the newspaper that said I could lose 10 pounds in one week on a cycling training plan. The plan included a personal trainer and cost $200 bucks. They had another, more intense plan that gauranteed a loss of 20 lbs in one week at a cost of $500. I chose the $200 plan and met the trainer on the bike path. It turns out she was a beautiful woman! She was in great shape and she said " Welcome to the training program! Heres how it works- I lead and you follow, If you can catch me within the next 5 days of training.... You can have your way with me" Well dang! I said forget this ! sign me up for the $500 program! So she did, and she said the program starts the following day at the same place and same time. So I was very excited. The next day rolled around and I was there early. I waited and a big hairy man pulled up next to me " Hi, my names Bubba. Welcome to the program. Heres how it works. You lead, and if I catch up, I will have my way with YOU!
Aaaha! Whoo Hoo! I cant believe I typed that whole joke in one comment!!! bahaahahaahaa!!!! Oh my.. time to get a life! Ta ta for now!
